Rembrandtin new waterborne solution for modern railway vehicles

Primer, filler, base coat, and clear coat: These four innovative products made by the international coatings manufacturer Rembrandtin represent a new, complete, environmentally friendly, and cost-efficient coating system for railway vehicles. The properties of the individual products are specifically designed to meet the high requirements of the railway vehicle sector.

Good looks are not everything but design does matter

Modern railway coatings must ensure high corrosion protection and hiding power, good anti-graffiti properties, stone-chip and detergents resistance. At the same time, customers demand a large variety of colours, as design is gaining ever more importance, particularly in the area of passenger transportation. Producers thus devote considerable attention to the outward appearance, which mainly depends on the coating and is becoming an increasingly time-consuming and costly matter. To address this issue, Rembrandtin leading team of specialists developed high-quality coatings that dry quick and enable fast further processing.

Decades of experience in the railway coatings sector

As a pioneer in the development of waterborne coatings, Rembrandtin combined the synergies and know-how of the Helios Group to create a new complete product solution. It is consisting of primer, filler, base coat, and clear coat, thus paving the way for a particularly efficient coating system for passenger coaches and goods wagons. The products are largely waterborne, can be applied to steel and aluminium substrates, and are optimised for manual and automated application. In addition, each product offers excellent properties designed to meet the demanding and permanently increasing requirements in the railway coatings sector. The approval by Deutsche Bahn is a case in point.

1. Primer and Filler in one

The waterborne primer surfacer based on a special binder combination makes one product redundant – it is primer and filler in one. With its excellent levelling properties, it prepares the substrate perfectly for the further application of a non-porous and very smooth basecoat. The product can be applied in any desired film thickness without the risk of solvent popping, which usually occurs when using polyurethane fillers. This ensures high first-run rates and saves the time for laborious repairs. Due to the particularly short drying times, this product is highly suitable for further processing such as sanding, filling, etc.

2. Masking after 45 minutes – a very fast drying Base Coat

This waterborne base coat offers excellent colouring power and colour retention as well as outstanding UV-resistance in all colour shades and particularly short drying times. During custom painting at usual room temperatures of about 20°C, the next layer can be applied after 45-60 minutes; when force-dried, the waiting time is reduced accordingly. Manufacturers not only save valuable time but also energy for the drying process. The product is approved by Deutsche Bahn.

3. Easy application and durability – the Clear Coat Plus

The new clear coat was specifically developed to meet the highest demands in the rail vehicle sector. It is very user-friendly and suitable for manual application, hand spray gun as well as automated application (2K Airmix lines) and delivers outstanding aesthetic results. The product has an increased popping-free film thickness, does not form orange peel and achieves a very high gloss level (> 90 at 60). In our internal test lab as well as in external tests, the product showed an extreme resistance against graffiti and detergents (e.g. detergents used in various concentrations in washing installations). Due the extremely high popping-free film thickness and easy application, also suppliers like to use this product.

4. Environmentally compatible and trend-setting – the Epoxy Monolayer

The waterborne epoxy monolayer coating is applied to inner and underbody constructions as well as bogies and mounting parts. Manufacturers achieve a dry film thickness of up to 250 µm with one coat. In addition, the epoxy monolayer corresponds to the requirements of Sheet 42 of Deutsche Bahn as well as Module 19 of ÖBB – provided that the dry film thickness is the same. The comparable ultra-high solids version of the product is highly suitable for the goods wagon sector. High solids products with high film thicknesses and a low number of processing steps are the latest trend – they will gain increasing importance especially in the goods wagon sector.
